CHPSC News:
The Club and ISORA Night race was delayed for 24 hours due to storm Ellen, but finally started in the dark at 21:30 last Saturday, with three boats coming to the line for the 36 mile course around St Tudwal's, Causeway and Madog Fairway.
The race started in 20-25kt westerly winds, forecast to moderate as the night progressed. "Jackknife" and "Mojito" made good starts with "Jac Y Do" a few minutes behind, with a slight delay due to sorting out a mainsail issue. The fetch to the islands was straight forward, but hard on the mainsails with some gusts causing sail flogging to those over canvassed. Easing sheets behind the Islands into a building sea, gave a fast reach to the Causeway, with a great breeze but (for Cardigan bay) some big waves to contend with, which were not easy to read in the darkness. One wave caused Phil "Flatly" Jackson on "Jac Y Do" to disappear down the companionway - a lá "Only Fools and Horses" - sorry Phil didn't mean to laugh - probably best not to lean on a sliding hatch!
Rounding Causeway, a fast reach on port with "Jackknife" seeing 20 kts boat speed and "Jac Y Do" 13-16kts at times. It was great fun surfing down the waves, with a steady 22-24kt breeze and the odd 30kt gust. Rounding Madog Fairway Buoy for the beat home, mercifully the sea flattened out and the wind started to ease, with the last boat to finish ("Jac Y Do") only seeing 5-6kts after Criccieth. A challenging race with "Jackknife" winning the ISORA and club King Constantine cup, and "Mojito" now leading the series by a few points, with one coastal race tomorrow, followed by an offshore race - potentially to Holyhead on the 5th September, to complete the 8 race series.
CHIPAC (Clwb Hwylio Ieuenctid Pwllheli A'r Cylch) - our youth sailing section continue their 2020 programme, and can be seen in action on Friday evenings from the balcony.

CHPSC News:
The Spinlock IRC Welsh National Championships incorporating the Celtic Regatta, concluded last Sunday at Pwllheli, with the full scheduled programme of racing completed. To comply with Welsh Government Covid regulations, it was necessary to split the regatta into three separately managed events, and not organise any formal social activities.
J109 Mojito starting under spinnaker off Gimlet Rock
With light winds and a short start line, it was tricky for race management, but using the club fixed marks and one inflatable mark they gave a variety of competitive racing for the inshore fleets, with the coastal class enjoying more breeze off shore with three races over the regatta - 16 miles, 26 miles and finally 32 miles on the last day, with a trip round Gwylan Islands, via Tom buoy.
Crew enjoyed refreshments and snacks in Plas Heli after racing, with unusually warm weather for the Regatta, enjoying fine views of the bay and mountains from the deck
The IRC Coastal class managed by ISORA was won by Peter Dunlop and Victoria Cox (Mojito)
In the IRC Welsh Championships classes, managed by the Royal Dee Yacht Club, Class 1 was won by Richard Fildes (Imposter) and Class 2 by Dave Hughes (Legless Again).
The large NHC Cruiser Class, managed by CHPSC, was won by Wil Partington (Wil2Win)

Planning has started for next years Regatta on the 13th-15th August 2021, and we hope to return with a bigger programme, and a more active social element should regulations allow. CHPSC News:
ISORA, sailing under the burgee of CHPSC, held a 70 mile offshore race last Saturday, with the fleet starting in light winds with a run down to "Patches" Cardinal buoy just off Aberystwyth, via the Causeway cardinal, and then a long beat up to Gwylan Islands (Aberdaron) and home. "Mojito" took a fine win, ahead of "Jackknife", "Jetstream" and "Jac Y Do" A challenging but interesting race, visiting all parts of Cardigan Bay. The club also held a cruiser race last Saturday Stephen Williams reports: "Race Officers Robin and Eilir set a circular course around the marks in the Bay.
The race started after an encounter with an angry fisherman in a string vest on the start line casting from the shore and threatening to hit boats. Goodness only knows what he thought the klaxons deafening him were all about!
Three boats "Theia", "Diogi" and "Darling**" came to the line, with "Darling**" building up a commanding lead only to sail into a hole on the leg across from PSC 8 to PSC 10. Astute skippers on "Diogi" and "Theia" saw "Darling**’s" predicament and steered around "Darling**" who by this time was going backwards with the tide. The race was won by Nicola and Tim Rouse on "Theia". Many thanks to Robin and Eilir for race management"

The "Stripped Down" Spinlock IRC Welsh National Championships starts today with 21 + boats competing in the four separate events that make up the championship. It promises to be three great days of racing in Tremadog Bay, and competitors can enjoy a drink and meal in Plas Heli after racing. There is no formal social programme this year, but I'm sure crews will enjoy a socially distanced apres sail. The latest event newsletter is here

CHPSC News:
After a night of low cloud and drizzle, conditions improved on Saturday for the first Pwllheli hosted ISORA race of 2020, sailed under the burgee of CHPSC with the start scheduled at 09:00 for a 50 mile race. The race course was from the PSC start line to PSC 1 turning mark, round Gwylan Islands (near Aberdaron), Causeway buoy, Porthmadog Fairway buoy - and finally to the finish using the Plas Heli line (a transit from Pwllheli Fairway buoy to the Plas Heli Bridge). Despite the forecast indicating a period of very light winds around lunchtime, the fleet enjoyed a reasonable but shifty breeze in all areas of the course, testing all points of sail, with Andrew Hall's "Jackknife" winning the overall just ahead of "Jetstream" and "Jac Y Do", with a winning margin of just 17 seconds over "Jetstream" after 50 miles of racing. ISORA are holding a 75 mile Offshore Race from Pwllheli on Saturday August 8th with an 09:45 start. Entries on the ISORA website here. This replaces the Dun Laoghaire - Pwllheli race originally scheduled for Saturday.
There is a club race organised on Saturday 8th for NHC "Cruisers Class" boats, with a 10 am start managed from the Pwllheli Bridge. Comms on Ch17 and entry form on the website here. Should the forecast allow, the course will be set on Friday evening with confirmation by the race officer on Saturday. Crew number limits (to allow for Welsh Covid regulations) are: 3 for boat up to 9m LOA, and 4 for boats above this. This race will also be dual scored for boats holding IRC certificates, should number allow. Stephen Williams is co ordinating.

CHPSC News:
After a night of rain, the skies cleared for the 2020 "Pwllheli Regatta" races last Saturday, with the IRC class starting a 13 mile race at 10:45 with a beat to the West End mark and then on to an SCYC mark SW of Llanbedrog (with thanks to SCYC for permission), followed by a run to PSC 10 near Pen Y Chain, and back to the finish. With a steady 10 kt breeze this class was won by Stephen Williams "Darling XX" from Andrew Hall "Jackknife", with 6 boats competing.
In NHC three boats competed starting at 11:00 with a PSC 9-mile "fixed marks" course set, with a windward/leeward track followed by a triangular lap, this class was won by Alan Barton "Induna" ahead of Dave Sharp in "Blue Sky" - A pleasant couple of hours racing, and the regatta trophies will be awarded at the Christmas Ball.

With high water at 18:00 there should be good views of our young sailors training in the bay from the Plas Heli balcony. These young sailors are the future of the sport we enjoy, and its so rewarding to support them.
It is with great sadness we mark the passing of Don Thatcher - the Club burgee is at half-mast. Don was Commodore of Clwb Hwylio Pwllheli Sailing Club from 1984 to 1985. With his wife Rita and family, they were active members of the club for many years, sailing their Moody 30, Don Phillipe.
